Repairing my Gameboy Part 2.

October 11, 2024

Was it that bad?.

Since I wasn’t able to repair the Gameboy myself, I decided to send my Gameboy to the person I found online to see what was actually wrong with the Gameboy. After a couple days I got a message that the Gameboy arrived safely and that he first of all did a deep clean on all the connectors and pins on the Gameboy to see if there was some hidden dust that would cause this.

That didn’t solve the problem. He also told me theat he send some photos to a friend who was more specialized in soldering, hoping that there lied the problem. This also wasn’t the case. They checked everything but, in the end, the motherboard could not be repaired. The only way to get the Gameboy working again was with a new motherboard. He asked me if it was okay to replace it with a normal DMG motherboard since this Gameboy is a Play it Loud version. I asked him if the Gameboy would function without problems with a normal motherboard and he told me it was okay.

So, he changed the motherboard with one condition from my side. That he would send the defect motherboard back to me with the Gameboy. I want to frame it and have it as a memory. In the same email he told me there was another problem with the Gameboy, I asked him what the problem was since honestly, I had no clue.

It was actually rather surprising for me to hear that there was a problem with the sound. I mean there was a soft sound when I turned it up myself and since most of the time I play games with a handheld my sound is either off or low. I explained him that it wasn’t a problem for me. In the reply I got he told me he was curious to see where the problem came from since he changed the motherboard and send the Gameboy to a friend who would check what the problem was.

I have to say I found this really nice to do. I mean the dedication that went into making the Gameboy like it is now makes me happy. A couple of days passed and I got a new message. The sound problem was probably because of the other board that is in the Gameboy. The board that is connected to the screen. This would cost some money and since I don’t really use sound. We agreed to leave it alone.

There were also some other things he changed to make the Gameboy look as good as it is now. He changed the screen, cleared out all the dirt and dust and cleaned the shell and buttons. The Gameboy now looks really nice and I am able to play the games I have on it. Maybe later I will get some other games just for fun. For now, the best part is that it works again and that it’s back with me.
