What was I thinking?
The Trimui smart pro, a device that has been on my Wishlist for a while now. This device looks a lot like a PSVita. Since, the PSVita is still one of my favorite handhelds I decided it was time to finally get one. Another thing I was curious about, would it be able to play PSP games as well as the internet has been telling me? I mean the specs are a lot like the RG40xxH. So, is the Trimui smart pro really better at playing PSP games or is it because it looks more like a PSVita?
I thought it was time to finally see how long stock cards from these devices would last. I mean I have been wondering about this for quite a while now and thought this would be a good chance to try it out. Honestly this plan didn’t turn out well. I just could not deal with the stock OS and the settings. I mean when it arrived everything was in Chinese language and the games were just a mess. I decided, since I want to give this device an honest chance and not hate it for the setting, to switch firmware.
Now I do have to admit that Crossmix OS is not a totally different firmware but how this firmware is set up is just way better then the original and makes it a lot more user friendly. Now I could play games on this device. Well as long as I put the games in the correct folders. Not sure how it happened but I managed to put the PS1 games in the PSP folders and wondering where my PS1 games were. Silly me, the console did recognize the games but didn’t play them of course
Now with everything in order and the games in their right folder, not forget added the bios for some of the emulators it was time to see how this device played PSP games. I mean since that is why people buy this one right? Let’s just say that it plays the same games like any other device does with these specs. This means it plays low end games and high-end games will lag or not work. I felt a little lied to, but on the other hand what did I expect? A miracle? This does not mean we cannot play a lot of great games on this device. I mean there are a ton of great low end PSP games out there and because of the screen size of this device I have to say yes, this device is good for PSP games. I just want to say don’t expect it to run everything.
That is not the only thing we can play on this device; I mean the people who made Crossmix OS did a really great job on setting up skins and overlays for the emulators. We can even scrape box art if we want, and there is Portmaster. I have to admit I have grown quite fond of Portmaster since they have a few of my all-time favorite games on it. Sadly, on this device not every game runs. I have some games that are not running on this one but do run on MuOs. I still have no idea why that is but also, I cannot actually be bothered by it.
Next try was PS1 games on this device. I think I did another mess up because the first time somehow, I got black screen when I started up a game. This was a very easy fix actually I just deleted my roms and added them again. Then I was able to play the games without trouble.
The N64 emulator was set up in this firmware too, but just you can only play a few low-end games. I tried Kirby but it had graphical problems and it was not playable. What I am able to play on this device was Mario kart. So, if you want to take a chance with N64 it’s a hit or miss. For example, I tried paper Mario but it keeps kicking me out of the game.
I have to say that playing games on this device it not a punishment to play games on. I mean it’s a little bigger than the RG40xxH and for some games I do enjoy playing them on a little bigger screen. For Gameboy games for example the overlays and skins are set perfect so it’s also nice to play them. Personally, I love my Miyoo Mini or another vertical handheld for Gameboy and color games so I will not play them on this device, but if you only want one handheld I can say that you can really enjoy those games on this bigger device too.
Personally, one thing I was actually surprised of was the sensitivity of the joysticks. I mean being used to the ones Anbernic has this was a pleasant surprise for me. Also, I think this console feels very solid holding it.
Personally, I do think this is a nice device, but I do think it’s a little overhyped about PSP games because this plays the same games as other devices with these specs. So, if you want this device for only playing these games keep in mind that you cannot play every PSP game on this device you need something more powerful for that. I also personally would not buy this again with a no brand Micro-SD card it’s just not set up well, and you have tons of Chinese games not to forget about the setting I already mention above.
If you can get this from a good seller with a Crossmix OS setup card for not a ton of money more I am sure as a beginner you can have lots of gaming time with this one. Or if you don’t want to set things up yourself. If you do want to start from scratch this could be your device depending on what you want to do with it, and if you really need the big screen. In the end some things are always personal so keep that in mind.
Till the next blog everyone
